100-Year-old Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Stands Tall

KANGAR, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The common English idiom "Don't judge a book by its cover" can be aptly applied in the case of Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya located on the fringe of this capital of Perlis.An enrollment of 372 pupils taught in 13 cramped classrooms of the school on a hectare of land at Km8.2 of Jalan Kaki Bukit is nothing much to shout about but a look at its list of ex-pupils can make any other school turn green with envy.Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya, which turned 100 today, has had the distinction of producing big names in the likes of Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah, the former culture, youth and sports minister; Gen (Rtd) Datuk Seri Che Mohd Noor Arshad, former chief of army; Datuk Kamaruddin Ahmad, former chairman of Malaysia Airlines; and Datuk Wira Dr Mazlan Ahmad, former major of Kuala Lumpur, just to name a few.Other notable people who have walked the corridors of the school include Abdul Malik Abdul Ghani, a former senator; Dariah Saad, a former Perlis director of education; Abdul Jalaini Che Johari, a geophysicist at Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd; and Nasmiza Ismail, general manager of manufacturing planning and group oil business at Petronas.Ten former pupils of the school aged 50 and above were honoured at the centennial celebration today.A holiday residence of the third Raja of Perlis, the late Tuanku Syed Safi Jamalullail, was used as the first building of the school.In 1918, another building, of earthen flooring and attap roofing, was put up on a "gotong-royong" (self-help) basis. Nine years later, yet another building, this time of wooden flooring and attap roofing, was erected.A girls' wing was established in 1929 and in 1960 both the girls' and boys' schools were brought under the administration of one headmaster.Rosly Sharif is the current and 19th headmaster of the school, which had won accolades as a promising school and for landscaping, both in 2002.Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya continues to be a source of nostalgia for many, including Jamsari Jamaluddin, press secretary to the Perlis menteri besar, who is also an old boy.

rupa-rupanya dah seratus tahun sekolah rendah yang pernah aku belajar dulu dari tahun 1974 hingga tahun 1979 sebelum aku sambung belajar ke sebuah sekolah berasrama penuh SMSAH aka jenan dan UKM.

di sekolah ini jugalah semua kaum keluarga aku yang menetap di kampung paya belajar. tapi nampaknya generasi anak-anak aku tidak lagi akan menyambung permulaan di sekolah ini lagi. semuanya akan tinggal kenangan-kenangan sahaja.

semoga sekolah ini akan terus maju seratus tahun lagi.
